The Passing of John Wooden

Well by now it is big news that John Wooden has passed on.  He is probably the greatest coach to ever be on the sideline of any sport.  10 National championships at one school I doubt will ever happen again.  To be honest I think every coach or want to be coach should take lessons from this man to learn how to be a better coach.

Here are some of the ESPN specials on John Wooden.

A great man, and to be honest it is another example of why do you want to coach?  Is it for the glory or is it to help make a difference in young mens lives?  I'll be honest if I can be remembered by those young men I coach later on in their lives then my life will be complete.  Those players that talk about John Wooden in the video is how I would like to be remembered.

Result of 1st Game

Well our 36 game winning streak came to an end on Friday. We lost 16-10 in a hard fought game. We made too many mental errors while they made the plays they needed to win the game. We are still a good team I think, we just can't make the tiny errors. One of the things I heard from the varsity coaches is that we played like we practiced.

For some of these players this is the first time they have lost in high school. This will be a good life lesson for these boys though. You aren't always going to win in life. It is how you respond to adversity that will determine how your life goes. This also might have been the best thing for these boys. No longer have pressure of the winning streak on our backs. Humbles them a little bit and they have to learn how to deal with adversity. Plus now we have been in a tough dogfight of a game and know what we need to do to respond in a game.

Watching the game film was frustrating because we had 4 trips in their red zone and came away with no points. Once again the little things are important of football. It reminds me of the Inch by Inch speech in Any Given Sunday. We missed our opportunities by inches. Now we gotta get ready for Highland of Idaho. We can't worry about the past now it is time to go into the future.

Humility

Remembering last season an event occurred which could have changed my path into coaching high school ball. Remember that I was given the job to be the line coach for the sophomore team, since the previous coach had left to go to Hawaii to be with a program there.

Unfortunately this previous coach couldn't find a job on the big island and so returned to the program as a sophomore line coach. Now I could have thrown a fit about being hired as the line coach and that it wasn't fair. I didn't and humbly just decided to continue learning from an experienced coach. My advice to any coaches is that sometimes you have to be humble to actually learn and grow as a coach.
